Human error of DNA evidence has led to a mistrial in the case of a murdered Cotati teen in 2016. During the trial, Richmond based Serological Research Institute, or SERI, informed Sonoma County prosecutors of incorrectly analyzing DNA evidence in the killing of 18-year-old Kirk Kimberly. Due to this, the attorneys for Daniel Carrillo, the suspect in the murder, successfully argued for a mistrial. A new court date for Carrillo will take place this Friday. On top of this, it is believed that SERI mishandled up to 580 cases across the state before correcting the problem in early 2022. The Sonoma County District Attorney’s office is still trying to figure out how many of those have affected local cases.
