People board the Skunk Train in Willits, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021. Tourists flock to the picturesque coastal town of Mendocino for its Victorian homes and cliff trails, but visitors this summer will also find public portable toilets and dozens of signs on picket fences announcing the quaint Northern California hamlet: "Severe Drought Please conserve water." Robert Pinoli, president of Mendocino Railway, which operates the Skunk Train, said he is ready to help. The excursion train has been running from Willits through redwood forests and river canyons to Fort Bragg since 1885, when it was built to transport timber. Pinoli said he could find tank cars quickly and attach them to the locomotive and could deliver up to 200,000 gallons each trip. (AP Photo/Haven Daley)
The town of Mendocino has been named one of the cutest towns to visit in California. World Atlas placed the Mendocino County coastal town on its unranked list of the “11 Cutest Small Towns in Califonia to Visit in 2024.” World Atlas called Mendocino “a Charming and quaint town known for its gorgeous beaches at Mendocino Headlands State Park and hiking trails.” It also praised nearby Russian Gulch State Park for it’s seaside botanical gardens and some of the tallest Redwoods.
Ferndale of Humboldt County was the only other Northern California town to make the list.
