Santa Rosa is looking to overhaul its historic home permitting process.

A proposed plan going before the City Council this week would create a new Design Review and Preservation Board, streamlining approvals and lowering fees for smaller projects in historic districts. This comes after outcry over recent fee hikes that led to the near-total resignation of the Cultural Heritage Board.

The aim is to make it easier and cheaper for homeowners to maintain their historic properties, encouraging preservation and preventing residents from avoiding permits. The council will also discuss lowering other recent fee increases.
