California is releasing more than one-million-dollars in state funding to support ranchers facing an increase in wolf attacks on livestock.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the grants as the state’s wolf population expands, with roughly 100 wolves now distributed across 12 packs, primarily in Northern California.
The financial relief follows at least two dozen livestock deaths in early 2026, which built on nearly 200 confirmed attacks recorded over the course of 2025.
Because wolves are officially protected under the California Endangered Species Act, ranchers are heavily restricted in how they can legally defend their herds, leaving many reliant on state compensation programs.
