Community Conversations on Race – Kayatta

Host Michelle Marques talks with Kayatta Patton, a rapper, poet, producer and educator, about her experience living in Sonoma County as a Black queer woman. Kayatta talks about her love for the Russian River and the peace she found out in the West County, as well as her experience with racism in a mostly white community. She praises some of the local venues for making a place for diverse artists, and acknowledges that there are other performance spaces that need to pull down barriers that keep performers like herself on the sidelines.

Kayatta also talks about her experience with On the Margins, a non-profit made up of health professionals, artists, researchers, and consultants who work to dismantle white-supremacist, heteropatriarchal, cisnormative, mono-normative, and colonial practices as they exist within the classroom, healthcare system, research lab, and larger community.
