SUMMARY:Sugarloaf Fire: Recovery\, Renewal\, & Late Summer Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:After the October 2017 Nun’s Fire and the October 2020 Glass Fire burned 99% of Sugarloaf\, it took months of hard work to repair trails and facilities. Now\, 6 years after the Glass Fire\, signs of the fire are masked by a vibrant recovery and renewal. Join Naturalist John Lynch on this 3.5-mile\, 3.5-hour hike along the Lower Bald Mountain hillside to the Observatory and back along the shady creekside to explore these remarkable changes and talk a little about how the original peoples of this area used fire. We will also search for late summer wildflowers\, butterflies and dragonflies. \nMeet at the main parking lot. Tickets are $10 for general audiences\, $5 for students\, youth (12-17 year olds; must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian)\, Sugarlof members\, Sugarloaf or RFO volunteers\, and free for children under 12. Tickets day-of on site are $15 and might not be available. Bring at least a quart of water\, layered clothing\, hiking shoes/boots\, snack\, sun protection\, and as an option\, hiking poles and/or a camera. Parking fees apply.

SUMMARY:Spike Sikes and His Awesome Hotcakes
DESCRIPTION:Just The Right Recipe… The most frequently heard comment after a Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes gig goes something like this –\n“No one is making this kind of music anymore!” \nBut what\, exactly\, is “this kind of music?”\nLike hotcakes themselves\, it goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm and Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple\, but when it’s done right\, it hits the spot\, and has you grinning from ear to ear. Spike has spent years searching for this sound. \nFrom the Texas blues joints he cut his teeth in to the funky halls of New Orleans\, he was always studying the music\, trying to find just the right recipe. It makes perfect sense that he found his bandmates in Sonoma County\, a music scene that has fostered many eclectic artists for decades. \nWhat he didn’t know was how hungry audiences were for “this kind of music.” You might say they’ve been eating it up like…Hotcakes! \nTICKETS:\nPURCHASE IN ADVANCE AND SAVE!\nZones A and B ensure a seat. Zone C has limited seating\, plus standing room.\nZone A $27\nZone B $23\nZone C $20 (does not guarantee seating)\nTickets at the door $27 (Zone C only) \nDoors open 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:Ravi Coltrave Quartet: Centennial Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Just days before John Coltrane would have turned 100\, his son\, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane\, presents a blazing young band to mark the milestone. Ravi\, 60\, spent the first quarter-century of his career acquiring a diverse array of experience and honing his own lustrous\, harmonically slippery compositions. But in recent years he’s taken up the family mantle with a variety of projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand\, championing the legacy of both his parents\, John and Alice Coltrane. \nFor this celebration\, he’s joined by the brilliant trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson\, a longtime collaborator who graduated from Berkeley High. Israeli pianist/keyboardist Gadi Lehavi made his Village Vanguard debut with Ravi at 15. Now 30\, he’s more than lived up to his enormous potential. Powering the quartet is Bay Area-reared drum sensation Elé Howell\, 28\, a supremely musical accompanist who gained national attention when Coltrane started hiring him in 2021 for various projects\, including Cosmic Music: Revisiting the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. \nJohn Coltrane’s presence continues to illuminate new directions for exploration. Join us for this special Centennial Celebration with Ravi Coltrane and his band.
