Teachers in Oakland are set to go on strike on Thursday. The Oakland Education Association voted Saturday to authorize the strike as teachers demand a 12-percent pay raise over the next three years. The school district says it can’t afford to pay more than five-percent. Teachers are also looking for more counselors and nurses for students as well as smaller class sizes. Tens of thousands of students would be affected by the strike. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is urging both sides to keep negotiating to avoid a walkout.
