Scientists say a whale species found on a Point Reyes beach is one they don’t usually see. The carcass of beaked whale was recently found on Drakes Beach by a National Park Service volunteer. The mammal is not common to Bay Area shores because they normally dwell in deep sea areas and at the poles. The whales resemble dolphins, but are unique for their tusk-like teeth among the males. Members of the California Academy of Sciences say they will remove the whale for testing and research at their labs.
