California Republican leaders are calling for utility bill forgiveness. In a letter to Senate Budget Committee Chair Nancy Skinner, Senator Jim Nielsen is urging the state to use some of its billion budget surplus to help residents struggling with their utility bills.
“Any extra money should first be directed towards one time uses and, in this particular case, be able to pay these really critical bills to keep them living,” Nielsen said. “The electricity, their internet, and other utilities, the water, those are key.”
Nielsen says low income Californians are facing both long term financial and public health concerns. One-point-six-million California households owe nearly $1 billion on their water bills and almost 9 million have been unable to pay their electric bills.
