Eureka’s Police department is reeling from a texting scandal. The Sacramento Bee obtained text messages traded between six officers who urged violent behavior against protesters, made sexual comments about women’s breasts, degraded homeless people, and ridiculed a suicidal veteran with mental health issues. The texts were largely started by Sergeant Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez and Mark Meftah. Kevin Robinson, a criminal justice professor and former assistant police chief in Phoenix, Arizona, said this type of behavior won’t stop until officers face discipline or get fired. Eureka’s Police Chief Steve Watson said his department is investigating the matter.
