A planned statewide walkout is expected to happen today, organized by people who disagree with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s school vaccine mandate. The state enacted a mandate earlier this month requiring students grades seven to 12 to get the vaccine by next fall once there’s federal approval for children ages 12 and over. Children five to eleven years old in California will also eventually be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine after federal approval. Many of those planning to take part in today’s walkout, including some in Sonoma County, say the mandate is a “government overreach” and point to data from the CDC that says there’s low death rates from children infected with COVID-19.
