Sebastopol leaders are considering banning biometric police surveillance technology. Local law enforcement would no longer be able to use facial recognition and predictive policing technologies. On Tuesday night, the Sebastopol City Council agreed to consider an ordinance that would make the ban official. The ordinance would also mean a bit of a change for the Sebastopol Police Department. It would have to hold a public hearing and get approval from the city council before getting or using any new surveillance technology like cameras or drones. Sebastopol police are not currently using biometric surveillance technology to identify suspects.
