The commercial Dungeness crab fishing season off the north and central coast is delayed again. That’s because large groups of federally-protected humpback whales are still swimming in fishing areas. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife first put the start of crab fishing season on hold in October. Officials say there are fewer whales in the protected areas now, but still too many to allow fishing boats to deploy fishing gear and traps. Surveyors recently spotted humpback whales feeding off Point Reyes, San Francisco Bay, and Monterey Bay.
