On Monday history was made as two justices were sworn into the California Supreme Court. Governor Gavin Newsom swore in Justice Patricia Guerrero as the chief justice, and Kelli Evans was sworn in as an associate justice. Guerrero is the first Latina to serve as the court’s chief justice, and Evans will be the court’s first openly lesbian female justice. The seven-member court is now made almost entirely of members appointed by the Democratic Governor. Justice Carol Corrigan is the only member appointed by a Republican.
