Amidst nationwide calls for TikTok bans on government devices, the state of California may enact something similar. North Bay State Senator Bill Dodd has introduced a bill that would ban all high-risk social media applications on state-owned or issued devices including cell phones, in part mirroring a federal ban. In a press release, Senator Dodd states “prohibiting these apps on state phones and other devices is a commonsense way to prevent exposure of our sensitive material and the possible tracking or data breaches.” Last fall, FBI Director Christopher Wray warned TikTok could be used for espionage by a non-democratic government. Nearly two dozen states have instituted limits for use of these apps on government-controlled devices.
