Congressman Mike Thompson is reintroducing two gun-related bills. One of the proposed bills from the Democrat representing Saint Helena would require universal background checks for gun sales. Thompson has spent a decade trying to pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, first introduced after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in 2012.
“The Bipartisan Background Checks Act is commonsense gun violence prevention legislation that will do the most important thing gun violence prevention legislation can do: save lives,” said Thompson. “By keeping weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals, we can help keep our communities safe and reduce the threat of gun violence.”
He introduced this bill along with Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Pennsylvania. The bill would outlaw the private transfer or exchange of a gun unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer or importer takes possession of the gun to conduct a background check. Thompson is also backing legislation that would create an active shooter alert system. It would operate similar to the AMBER Alert or Nixle notification programs.
