The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has approved a ban on new retail gas stations in unincorporated areas of the county. It has also approved a ban on expansions to existing gas stations, including adding more pumps. Six of the nine cities in Sonoma County have taken similar steps. The Petaluma City Council was the first to ban new fossil fuel stations when it passed a measure in March of 2021. The other five cities are Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Sebastopol, Cotati, and Windsor. Sonoma County has 158 retail gas stations, 46 of which are in unincorporated areas.
