Former Sonoma Resident Goes on Trial for Fake Child Abduction Case

A former Sonoma resident accused of faking an attempted child abduction will go on trial today. Aspiring social media influencer Katie Sorenson claimed a couple tried to kidnap her two young children while they were shopping at a Michael’s Store in Petaluma in December of 2020. Prosecutors say Sorenson was trying to grow her Instagram brand and raise money. Her claim went viral, then police called it a lie. Sorenson is facing three counts of making a false report of a crime. She’s facing a year and a half in jail if convicted on all three counts. Court documents say Sorenson was significantly involved with Qanon conspiracy theories, which often involve kidnappers and pedophiles.
