Over 500 units of affordable housing have been approved for Sonoma County under a 2017 law. The Press Democrat reports that Senate Bill 35 has allowed developers to bypass certain steps in the approval process, which speeds up construction. That includes four projects in Santa Rosa that have a combined 336 units of affordable housing. Those skipped steps include environmental reviews required by the California Environmental Quality Act and public hearings. Some local governments, though, have complained over the loss of land control due to SB 35. The law expires in 2026.
