A city government is asking for mercy on behalf of animal rights activists. The Sebastopol City Council has passed a resolution asking the Sonoma County’s DA’s office to show leniency to four animal rights activists accused of stealing chickens and ducks from poultry farms near Petaluma. The resolution states that the activists were, quote, “attempting to expose the abuses of nonhuman animals in commercial animal operations.” It goes on to ask the DA to spend their efforts on investigating commercial animal operations for violations. Sebastopol Mayor Neysa Hinton and council member Jill McLewis voted against the resolution saying it wasn’t the city’s concern. Three of the four defendants were in court yesterday to set trial dates.
