Governor Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson says he is “not backing away” from cash payments as reparations for slavery. The payments would cost the state billions of dollars. Newsom signed an Assembly Bill that created the California Reparations Task Force in 2020. The goal of the committee is to create a plan for reparations for the state’s past injustices involving the history of racial discrimination against Black people.
