Sonoma Getting High-Tech Trashcans for Over $150,000

The city of Sonoma is spending 158-thousand-dollars on 81 new high-tech trashcans. The new trash bins, approved by Sonoma’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission, will replace the existing ones on the Sonoma Plaza. The commission could have spent about 117-thousand-dollars on more traditional trash cans. But, these come with sensors that alert city staff to when they’re full. The trashcans will be placed in groups of three at 27 stations around the plaza. Each group will have a black bin for general waste, a blue bin for recyclables, and a green bin for compost.
