Trans and non-binary students at Analy High School are upset that their chosen names were not used in the school yearbook. Students spoke with the Press Democrat and say they were saddened and angry that they had been deadnamed in the yearbook – deadnaming is the act of calling a transgender or nonbinary person by their name prior to transitioning, often their birth name. The students pointed out that cisgender students (those who go by the gender assigned at birth) were allowed to have nicknames in the yearbook – showing a double standard by the school. After reviewing the book, students say they found up to 16 people who had been deadnamed. School officials apologized and said they would review names with students next year.
