Most new laws go into effect each year on January first, but this year, a handful of measures become law in California on July first. Among them, one requires gun manufacturers and their distributors to closely monitor sales and allows for civil lawsuits to be served if they do not. Next month California will become the first state to automatically seal most criminal and arrest records for people who complete their sentences and are not repeat offenders. Online retailers will be required to disclose more information about third-party sellers under a new law that carries fines beginning at ten-thousand dollars. And on the first of July, electronic filing of restraining orders will be allowed in cases of domestic or gun violence.
