Democratic Assembly Public Safety Committee Chair Reggie Jones-Sawyer is asking for billions of dollars to combat overdose deaths. He wants five-point-two billion in bonds to go toward what he calls a “comprehensive approach, instead of a bill-by-bill approach,” to the fentanyl crisis. Jones-Sawyer says he’s concerned about the mass incarceration of Black and brown Californians. He previously opposed Republican-led efforts to create stronger penalties for fentanyl dealers. Data shows about 71-hundred Californians died from opioid overdoses in 2021, and 83-percent of those were fentanyl related.
