The database was inadvertently revealed when the California Department of Justice accidentally published personal information of approximately 192-thousand gun owners last summer. Firearm owners protested and a lawsuit now threatens the data infrastructure, despite federal funding for this research. House Republicans have vowed to kill the funding. The NRA consistently opposes efforts to provide gun violence data and research. At risk is the information the California data can provide regarding domestic violence, injury and gun deaths.
