Scam Alert: Caller Pretends to be Sonoma Sheriff’s Sergeant Asking for Money

Beware of a scammer pretending to be a Sonoma County Sheriff Sergeant. The sheriff’s office has received reports of a caller claiming to be a sergeant telling victims they have missed a court date and is requesting gift cards as payment. It is a scam and the Sonoma County Sheriff Office will never call and ask for money, gift cards, or payments of any kind. Scammers are very good at trying to create a high pressure situation in order to get you to comply with their requests without thinking. Think before you give away money or personal information, especially if you aren’t expecting it. Be wary of phone calls from unknown numbers. And, If you’re ever unsure, call your local law enforcement agency and report it.
