Save the Redwoods League is buying nearly 400 acres of redwood forest above the Russian River near Guerneville. The purchase includes a mile of river frontage, as well as the treasured 2000-year-old Clar Tree, Sonoma County’s tallest tree. Part of the forest may be opened for recreational use including cycling, hiking and boat-in camping. Two-hundred-and-twenty-four-acres of the land was targeted for logging under a controversial logging plan. The sale is still not final, though, as Save the Redwoods League has to raise $6.5-million for the purchase by September 30th. However, organization leaders tell the Press Democrat that they’re confident they can make that happen.
