Clare Harris, Former Owner of Johnson’s Beach, Passes Away at 102

A longtime owner of Johnson’s beach has died. The Press Democrat reports that Clare Harris passed away last Saturday at the age of 102 at his home in Guerneville. Harris owned and operated the beach resort for 47 years before selling it in 2014. Clare’s father, Harry, had owned the resort and the 10-acre business district in Rio Nido. It eventually went to Clare and his older brother, Herb, and they sold Rio Nido. However, they would buy Johnson’s Beach in 1967. Clare only charged for refreshments, boat rentals and inflatables, keeping admission and parking free. Even after retirement, he would still stop on by during the season.
