Senator Who Replaced Feinstein Not Running for Reelection

California U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler says she will not be running for reelection. Butler became the third Black woman to become a senator when she was appointed to fill the seat of the late Dianne Feinstein. In a statement, Butler says “I know this will be a surprise to many because traditionally we don’t see those who have power let it go. It may not be the decision people expected but it’s the right one for me.” Without an election focus, Butler plans to use her 383 days in office to “serve the people of California with every ounce of energy and every effort that (she) has.” The field of candidates for the seat is already wide with political heavyweights and lesser-knowns alike on the ballot.
