California is fighting wildfires in new and innovative ways and that leap forward is being recognized. TIME is recognizing Cal Fire and AlertCalifornia’s AI Wildfire Detector as a “Best Invention of 2023.” The partnership between the state fire agency and U-C San Diego is using A-I and over one thousand cameras to detect smoke and stop wildfires before they grow. In the first two months, the system had correctly identified 77 fires before any 9-1-1 calls came in. The global media brand TIME known for their “Person of the Year” magazine issue is branching out to give props to other areas of human endeavor.
