A great educational leader has died in Sonoma. The Press Democrat reports Charles E. “Chuck” Young passed away at the age of 91 this past Sunday. He died from natural causes after contracting pneumonia. Young was most known as the former chancellor of UCLA from 1968 to 1997, never shying away from his principles and speaking out. He moved to Sonoma in 2012 and almost immediately began serving on the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation board of directors, advocating for local schools. Young even served as interim superintendent of the Sonoma Valley Unified School District during the 2017-18 school year. During his time, he helped the district restore financial stability and helped unify instruction and delivery of a common math and languages arts curricula across all five elementary schools.
