California’s first fully renewable, stand-alone power system is now up and running in the Mayacamas Mountains. The power system, which is in a remote area, was unveiled by PG&E and the Pepperwood Preserve on Monday. The solar-powered system means PG&E can remove nearly three-fourths of a mile of overhead distribution lines that go down a wind-swept hillside and make for a greater wildfire risk. The utility says hundreds of other locations that face a high risk of wildfires could have a similar stand-alone power system in the future. In other places, powerlines will be buried or power poles and overhead lines will be strengthened to mitigate the risk of wildfires.
