Crab Season Won’t Start Until After New Year’s

There’s another delay for this year’s Dungeness crab season. Fishing can begin January 5th in Northern California but will stay closed south of the Sonoma-Mendocino County line through Christmas and New Year’s Day. This is to protect whales and sea turtles from getting caught in traps. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has pushed back the season for the past five years. The next risk assessment will be done in about three weeks.
