New Law Preventing Crime Free Housing Law Takes Effect in California

A new law that takes effect January 1st bans California cities and counties from enforcing so-called “crime-free housing” laws. Several jurisdictions across the state have measures that prohibit landlords from renting to people with criminal histories. Assembly Bill 1418 was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. It bans the enforcement of those local prohibitions, making it possible for convicts who have served their time in prison to find a consistent place to live.
