West Napa Fault Line More Dangerous Than Previously Thought

The fault that produced the magnitude 6.0 south Napa earthquake in 2014 may be able to produce an earthquake nearly 32 times stronger. That’s according to research and updated mapping from the U.S. Geological Survey. Researchers say the fault, which runs along the west edge of the Napa Valley, may actually run nine miles farther north than previously thought. It may also extend farther south, at least past Vallejo to the Carquinez Strait, putting it at a total length of 37 miles. The USGS now believes the fault may be able to produce a magnitude 7.0 earthquake.
