Defense attorneys for the parents of a child who died of fentanyl poisoning in 2022 are asking a judge to order Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez not to issue public “misinformation” about the drug. The request, filed Monday, came in response to a series of news stories about radio public service announcements Rodriguez’s office had paid for with a federal grant. The ads, according to medical experts, included misinformation about fentanyl — the synthetic opioid that has driven waves of overdose deaths around the country. The PSAs, which were written by Brent Farris, the former morning show host on KZST, aired on KSRO and our sister stations. In the filing, defense attorneys representing both parents of a 15-month-old girl who was found dead with acute fentanyl levels in her blood, suggested the PSAs and Rodriguez’s remarks about them strayed into commentary about the case. Judge Robert LaForge, who is overseeing the case, has set a hearing for February 21st on the motion for a gag order.
