Sonoma County saved 314-million-dollars in salary and benefits between the 2019-2020 and 2022-2023 fiscal years. In that same period, close to 90-million-dollars were spent on employee overtime. But, the president of the local Service Employees International Union isn’t celebrating, saying all that money was saved because hundreds of positions with the county were left unfilled. This fiscal year, the county is using some of that leftover money to fund a massive recruitment effort in hopes of filling many of those vacancies.
