Two small elementary school districts in north Sonoma County are closing their transitional kindergarten programs. The Alexander Valley and Geyserville school districts say they lack the funding to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s five-year plan for universal transitional kindergarten. The plan was announced in 2021, and last year, Newsom allotted one-point-two-billion-dollars to fund districts that were establishing or expanding their TK programs. However, so-called basic aid districts like Alexander Valley and Geyserville did not get any of that money. The districts get most of their annual funding from local property taxes rather than from the state.
