A suspended Mendocino County Auditor has pleaded not guilty for misusing funds. Chamise Cubbison made the not guilty plea for embezzlement and misappropriation of funds yesterday in court. A preliminary hearing is set for April 15th. Cubbison and Paula Kennedy, a former Mendocino County payroll manager, are accused of misappropriating $68-thousand in public funds between October of 2019, and August of 2022. Kennedy was allegedly paid this money without authorization of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors, which oversees the county budget and approves most large expenditures. Cubbison’s attorney tells the Press Democrat that Kennedy was owed money by the county and Cubbison, as the county’s elected accounting chief, had approval to disperse funds.
