How do California property taxes compare with the rest of the country?
According to the US Census Bureau, the average American household spends $2,869 on property taxes for their homes each year. WalletHub has ranked all the states and Washington DC for their property taxes. California was ranked 16th lowest in the country with an effective real estate tax of 0.71-percent. Of course, with homes costing more in the Golden State, annual taxes on a median priced home in California are over $4,600, which ranks in the top ten for the actual cost of annual property taxes.
Hawaii was ranked as the state with the lowest property tax rate while New Jersey had the highest.
