A man piloting Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s plane crashed and died near Half Moon Bay in May 2023. Now, his widow is taking the billionaire tech executive to court with a wrongful death lawsuit. Maria Magdalena Olarte filed an amended complaint on February 13th in the California Superior Court, Santa Clara County, alleging that Brin is partially to blame for her husband Lance Maclean’s death and the ensuing struggle to retrieve his body. The plane’s fuel system stopped working during a flight from Santa Rosa to Hawaii and the pilot and his co-pilot weren’t able to make it back to the California coastline. The seaplane allegedly had an added auxiliary fuel system, so it could make the 2,300-mile journey from Santa Rosa to Hawaii in one flight. But, according to the complaint, the owners didn’t have the right paperwork or certifications to add the special system that caused the malfunction, and it was badly installed.
