California’s High Minimum Wage Still Not Enough to Survive in the Golden State

California’s 16-dollar an hour minimum wage is higher than most of the country. But the cost of housing and other factors mean that it’s not enough to survive in the Golden State. A new report by the California Legislative Analyst’s Office details which groups are struggling the most. According to the report, half of low-wage earners in California are over 35, and one-forth are over 50. The report defines low-wage earners as those making 17-50 an hour or less. Most are home healthcare workers, retail workers, farm workers and waiters. For minimum wage earners who are single parents, only three rural counties are considered affordable: Modoc, Trinity and Colusa counties.
