Endangered Bird In the Way of Ship Debris Cleanup Near Bodega Bay

A federally endangered bird is complicating cleanup efforts along Salmon Creek State Beach near Bodega Bay. California State Parks officials are trying to get debris removed from the beach, after a fishing boat, the Aleutian Storm, ran aground then broke apart last month. Much of the debris is non-biodegradable polystyrene foam, which keeps getting broken down into smaller pieces by the sun, wind and waves. But, the same strip of beach where the ship wrecked is used for nesting by the federally endangered snowy plover, which is in its breeding season right now. A beach cleanup is scheduled for Saturday. Organizers are asking for volunteers, but don’t want too many people there to possibly disturb the birds.
