Minimum Wage Up to $20 Per Hour for California Fast Food Workers Starting Today

Fast food workers in California will see a higher minimum wage starting today. Employees will be earning at least 20 dollars per hour, up from 16. The law also creates a new fast-food council that can choose to increase the minimum wage each year through 2029. It can be bumped up by an average of three-and-a-half percent or the change in averages for the U.S. Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, depending on which is lower. California’s fast-food workers are currently earning an average of a little more than 34-thousand dollars per year, which is below the California Poverty Measure for a family of four.
