A Northern California lawmaker is trying to boost homeowner insurance coverage. Democratic State Senator Josh Becker of Menlo Park has a bill that he says would force insurance companies to recalculate the cost of coverage against wildfires. Becker says his bill requires insurance companies to consider the billions of dollars the state has spent on wildfire mitigation and the work homeowners do to make their properties more defensible. Critics of the bill say it will unnecessarily increase risk and costs for insurance companies, forcing them to raise rates, cancel policies, or leave the state altogether.
