North Bay, state and national cannabis leaders called the latest move on a proposal to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug historic. The proposal by the DEA would move pot from the Schedule I category, with drugs like heroin, and into the Schedule III category, that includes drugs like Tylenol with Codeine. The proposed change follows a recommendation from U.S. Health and Human Services and a call by President Biden for a review of federal drug policy. Brandon Levine, CEO of Sonoma County-based Mercy Wellness, sent a letter last month to the White House asking for a change. Levine got a letter in response, signed by the president, promising a pledge to review marijuana’s classification as a Schedule I drug.
