Anyone out and about in Petaluma on Saturday morning may have found themselves counting sheep. Ranchers on a quad and two dogs moved about 65 sheep down East D Street. The sheep were moved from a small pen at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds to Steamer Landing, where 600 other sheep already were. It was the city’s sixth annual Transhumance Festival. The word “Transhumance” refers to the seasonal movement of livestock between pastures in the mountains and lowlands.
