Cotati Police Advisory Group Might Be Coming Back After Prolonged Absence

The City of Cotati is poised to bring back its police advisory group after nearly 30 years. The Press Democrat reports that the Cotati City Council is considering bringing the group back, and that move could be finalized later this summer. However, the group would be advisory only and have no authority to conduct investigations into complaints or issues pertaining to the police department. Cotati Police Chief Chris Simmons is even backing this group’s return as a way to keep the community engaged. There hasn’t been a significant incident involving police to warrant a return of the advisory group. Rather, local residents say distrust of the police has grown since the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.
