An initiative that would make it harder for state and local governments to raise taxes will not be on the November ballot. The California Supreme Court ruled Thursday in favor of Governor Gavin Newsom and the state legislature, which urged the court to remove the Taxpayer Protection Act from the ballot. The measure would have allowed voters to approve future taxes and fees imposed by state and local governments and raise thresholds for approval of local taxes. The Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act (TPA) campaign argues the court’s order is the “‘greatest threat to democracy in California.”
